A leading aluminium maker → CBAM actual values + green-power deduction

Aluminium is a CBAM carbon-intensive priority, with power dominating emissions. The smelter used actual-value accounting plus a green-power-deduction evidence chain to cut potential CBAM tariffs sharply, while also feeding China’s ETS.

This case is fully anonymised and refers to no specific customer.

Customer
A leading aluminium smelter (electrolysis-led, part of output to the EU)

A major domestic aluminium smelter, exporting part of its output to the EU. Aluminium emissions concentrate in electricity use, so CBAM embedded emissions are highly sensitive to “which electricity”: using green power (hydro/wind/solar) with verifiable evidence sharply lowers embedded emissions and potential tariffs. But the customer’s green-power consumption lacked an evidence chain precisely matched to product output, and no CBAM actual-value accounting existed — risking forced use of high default values.

The challenge

Under the twin pressure of compliance and cost, these were the core problems.

Aluminium emissions hinge on electricity; whether green-power deductions hold directly drives CBAM cost.

Green-power use lacked a verifiable chain matched to output, hard for the EU to accept.

Default values are markedly high; keeping them weakens export competitiveness.

The AMT approach

From the data foundation to compliant delivery — phased, end to end.

  1. 1
    Granular power data

The L1 platform ingests time-of-use power and green-power certificates, mapping electricity to output in detail.

  2. 2
    Green-power deduction chain

Match green-power use to product output precisely, forming a verifiable deduction chain for CBAM indirect-emission reductions.

  3. 3
    CBAM actual-value filing

PCF computes aluminium embedded emissions on actual values per CBAM methodology, auto-generating filing fields.

  4. 4
    Carbon assets & domestic link

The same data feeds China’s ETS and carbon-asset management, aligning domestic and export sides.

For aluminium, it ultimately comes down to whether your green power “adds up”. Once green power was matched to each batch of metal, CBAM cost looked completely different.
